April 28 - Morning

"Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, the son of Jehu, king of Israel, with the challenge: 'Come, let us face each other in battle.'
But Jehoash king of Israel replied to Amaziah king of Judah:
'A thistle in Lebanon sent a message to a cedar in Lebanon, "Give your daughter to my son in marriage." Then a wild beast in Lebanon came along and trampled the thistle underfoot. You have indeed defeated Edom and now you are arrogant. Glory in your victory, but stay at home! Why ask for trouble and cause your own downfall and that of Judah also?'
Amaziah, however, would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel attacked. He and Amaziah king of Judah faced each other at Beth Shemesh in Judah."

- Second Kings 14:8-11

Amaziah of Judah Challenges Jehoash of Israel

Amaziah replaced his father as king when he was twenty-five years old. He followed the law of the Lord in his judgment and he built up and organized the military. When Amaziah paid 3 ¾ ton of silver for 100,000 soldiers from Israel to fight with them a prophet rebuked him and Amaziah sent them home but allowed them to keep the silver. Amaziah then marched off and defeated the Edomites. While he was gone the 100,000 men he sent back to Israel plundered Judean towns and killed 3,000 people. Amaziah carried back the idols of Edom and, amazingly, began to worship them. Amaziah was rebuked by a prophet but when he threatened the prophet the prophet said, “I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel” (2 Chron. 25:16). Amaziah then challenged Jehoash, king of Israel, son of Jehoahaz and grandson of Jehu. Jehoash then invaded Judah and captured Amaziah at Beth Shemesh. They went to Jerusalem and tore down part of the walls and took gold and silver from the temple and hostages from the palace. Amaziah fled to Lachish but men from Jerusalem pursued him and killed him there.
Rea’ (Hb) – Friend (Eng) – rea is the Hebrew word that means “friend” and “companion.” In Jeremiah 3:20 rea’ can refer to a husband and in Song of Solomon 5:16 rea’ is the lover. Rea’ is used in Genesis 11:3 when the builders of the tower of Babel spoke to each other and in Genesis 11:7 when the Lord said, “Come, let us (rea’) go down and confuse their language.” In Exodus 2:13 Moses asks the two Hebrews who were fighting, “Why are you striking your rea’ ?”
I will listen to advise and obey the Word of God so that I might be confident as
I look for the goodness that God desires to demonstrate in my life.

Someone to Quote

"Jesus made no compromise with a merely worldly society. Confronted with kingship, His answer was not even a word - it was rejection and solitude. But he emerged from his solitude to teach of a 'society' that was to be one flesh and one bloodstream with himself, a mystical union of all men in His Body, where solitude and the common life are realized perfectly both together at the same time."
- Thomas Merton

Something to Ponder

For those who reject the authenticity of Moses and the Old Testament consider Jesus’ words:
“If you believed Moses you would believe me, for he wrote about me. But since you do not believe what he wrote, how are you going to believe what I say? (John 5:46-47)

Here’s a Fact

Multiple decorated fragments and architectural elements from the Royal Stoa that set along the south end of the Temple Mount has been found. They include a variety of motifs typical of Herodian Jerusalem and matching Josephus’ detailed description. Corinthian capitals from columns 4 feet, 9 1/2 inches in diameter have been found. Eilat Mazar writes that a column with this diameter would have stood on a 28 inch high base and supported a 6 foot capital at the top. The column itself would have been 33 feet tall. The total height would have been 41 feet tall.

Proverb

Some of the faults we identify in others are only faults because of our own weaknesses. So, these are not their faults but ours.

Judges 1
New International Version (NIV)
Israel Fights the Remaining Canaanites
After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the Lord, “Who of us is to go up first to fight against the Canaanites?”
The Lord answered, “Judah shall go up; I have given the land into their hands.”
The men of Judah then said to the Simeonites their fellow Israelites, “Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours.” So the Simeonites went with them.
When Judah attacked, the Lord gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands, and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes.
Then Adoni-Bezek said, “Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them.” They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there.
The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire.
After that, Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills. 10 They advanced against the Canaanites living in Hebron (formerly called Kiriath Arba) and defeated Sheshai, Ahiman and Talmai. 11 From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
12 And Caleb said, “I will give my daughter Aksah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher.” 13 Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Aksah to him in marriage.
14 One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, “What can I do for you?”
15 She replied, “Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water.” So Caleb gave her the upper and lower springs.
16 The descendants of Moses’ father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the people of Judah to live among the inhabitants of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.
17 Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their fellow Israelites and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah. 18 Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron—each city with its territory.
19 The Lord was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had chariots fitted with iron. 20 As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who drove from it the three sons of Anak. 21 The Benjamites, however, did not drive out the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites.
22 Now the tribes of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the Lord was with them. 23 When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz), 24 the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, “Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well.” 25 So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family. 26 He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day.
27 But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land. 28 When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely. 29 Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them. 30 Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, so these Canaanites lived among them, but Zebulun did subject them to forced labor. 31 Nor did Asher drive out those living in Akko or Sidon or Ahlab or Akzib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob. 32 The Asherites lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land because they did not drive them out. 33 Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. 34 The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain. 35 And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the tribes of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 36 The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond.
1 Chronicles 24
New International Version (NIV)
The Divisions of Priests
24 These were the divisions of the descendants of Aaron:
The sons of Aaron were Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.
But Nadab and Abihu died before their father did, and they had no sons; so Eleazar and Ithamar served as the priests. With the help of Zadok a descendant of Eleazar and Ahimelek a descendant of Ithamar, David separated them into divisions for their appointed order of ministering. A larger number of leaders were found among Eleazar’s descendants than among Ithamar’s, and they were divided accordingly: sixteen heads of families from Eleazar’s descendants and eight heads of families from Ithamar’s descendants. They divided them impartially by casting lots, for there were officials of the sanctuary and officials of God among the descendants of both Eleazar and Ithamar.
The scribe Shemaiah son of Nethanel, a Levite, recorded their names in the presence of the king and of the officials: Zadok the priest, Ahimelek son of Abiathar and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites—one family being taken from Eleazar and then one from Ithamar.
The first lot fell to Jehoiarib,
the second to Jedaiah,
the third to Harim,
the fourth to Seorim,
the fifth to Malkijah,
the sixth to Mijamin,
10 the seventh to Hakkoz,
the eighth to Abijah,
11 the ninth to Jeshua,
the tenth to Shekaniah,
12 the eleventh to Eliashib,
the twelfth to Jakim,
13 the thirteenth to Huppah,
the fourteenth to Jeshebeab,
14 the fifteenth to Bilgah,
the sixteenth to Immer,
15 the seventeenth to Hezir,
the eighteenth to Happizzez,
16 the nineteenth to Pethahiah,
the twentieth to Jehezkel,
17 the twenty-first to Jakin,
the twenty-second to Gamul,
18 the twenty-third to Delaiah
and the twenty-fourth to Maaziah.
19 This was their appointed order of ministering when they entered the temple of the Lord, according to the regulations prescribed for them by their ancestor Aaron, as the Lord, the God of Israel, had commanded him.
The Rest of the Levites
20 As for the rest of the descendants of Levi:
from the sons of Amram: Shubael;
from the sons of Shubael: Jehdeiah.
21 As for Rehabiah, from his sons:
Ishiah was the first.
22 From the Izharites: Shelomoth;
from the sons of Shelomoth: Jahath.
23 The sons of Hebron: Jeriah the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third and Jekameam the fourth.
24 The son of Uzziel: Micah;
from the sons of Micah: Shamir.
25 The brother of Micah: Ishiah;
from the sons of Ishiah: Zechariah.
26 The sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi.
The son of Jaaziah: Beno.
27 The sons of Merari:
from Jaaziah: Beno, Shoham, Zakkur and Ibri.
28 From Mahli: Eleazar, who had no sons.
29 From Kish: the son of Kish:
Jerahmeel.
30 And the sons of Mushi: Mahli, Eder and Jerimoth.
These were the Levites, according to their families. 31 They also cast lots, just as their relatives the descendants of Aaron did, in the presence of King David and of Zadok, Ahimelek, and the heads of families of the priests and of the Levites. The families of the oldest brother were treated the same as those of the youngest.
Psalm 88
New International Version (NIV)
Psalm 88
A song. A psalm of the Sons of Korah. For the director of music. According to mahalath leannoth. A maskil of Heman the Ezrahite.

Lord, you are the God who saves me;     day and night I cry out to you.

May my prayer come before you;     turn your ear to my cry.

I am overwhelmed with troubles     and my life draws near to death.

I am counted among those who go down to the pit;     I am like one without strength.

I am set apart with the dead,     like the slain who lie in the grave, whom you remember no more,     who are cut off from your care.

You have put me in the lowest pit,     in the darkest depths.

Your wrath lies heavily on me;     you have overwhelmed me with all your waves.

You have taken from me my closest friends     and have made me repulsive to them. I am confined and cannot escape;

my eyes are dim with grief.
I call to you, Lord, every day;
I spread out my hands to you.
10
Do you show your wonders to the dead?     Do their spirits rise up and praise you?
11
Is your love declared in the grave,     your faithfulness in Destruction?
12
Are your wonders known in the place of darkness,     or your righteous deeds in the land of oblivion?
13
But I cry to you for help, Lord;     in the morning my prayer comes before you.
14
Why, Lord, do you reject me     and hide your face from me?
15
From my youth I have suffered and been close to death;     I have borne your terrors and am in despair.
16
Your wrath has swept over me;     your terrors have destroyed me.
17
All day long they surround me like a flood;     they have completely engulfed me.
18
You have taken from me friend and neighbor—     darkness is my closest friend.
